Berkey® Cleaning & Maintanance
Regular cleaning and proper maintenance are essential for keeping your Berkey® water filtration system functioning efficiently and safely. Whether you're using a Travel Berkey, Big Berkey, Royal, Imperial, Crown Berkey, or Berkey Light, this guide walks you through cleaning your chambers, spigot, filters, and maintaining your system for long-term use.
Routine Maintenance Schedule
Component | Cleaning Frequency |
Upper & lower chambers | Every 30 days (or as needed) |
Spigot | Every 30 days |
Black Berkey® filters | Every 6 months (or if flow slows) |
PF-2 fluoride filters | Replace every 1,000 gallons or annually |
Cleaning the Stainless Steel Chambers
- Remove the upper chamber and lid
- Drain any water from the lower chamber
- Remove the filters (if you’re cleaning them as well)
- Use mild dish soap and warm water and clean both inside and outside surfaces with a soft sponge
- Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads
- Wipe dry with a clean towel or allow to air dry
- Reassemble only when completely dry
Tip: A 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water can be used occasionally to remove scale buildup or mineral residue.
Cleaning the Spigot
- Remove the Spigot
- Unscrew from the lower chamber
- Separate washers and nuts if applicable
- Soak in vinegar solution: Use a 1:1 mixture of clean water and white vinegar and soak for 5–10 minutes
- Rinse and Reattach
- Rinse thoroughly under clean water
- Reassemble and ensure a tight, leak-free fit
Cleaning the Black Berkey® Purification Elements
- Remove the Elements from the upper chamber
- Scrub each filter under cold running water using a Scotch-Brite® pad or stiff toothbrush. No soap or detergents
- Scrub the black surface gently to remove residue
- Re-prime the filters before reinstalling
- Use either the priming button, the Prime Rite™ Universal Primer, or the bottle method if no faucet is available
Warning: Never allow filters to dry out if storing for less than 15 days. For longer storage, dry them completely (see below).
Cleaning the PF-2 Fluoride & Arsenic Filters (Optional)
PF-2 filters cannot be scrubbed. Instead:
- Replace every 1,000 gallons or once per year
- Do not use soap or vinegar on PF-2 filters
- Discard and replace if you notice a reduction in flow or a change in taste
Filter Storage & Reuse
Short-Term Storage (4–15 days):
- Remove filters while damp
- Place in sealed plastic bag
- Store in refrigerator (not freezer)
Long-Term Storage:
- Let filters air dry completely for 1–3 days
- Store in a sealed, odor-free bag in a cool, dry place
- Re-prime before reusing
Optional: Use the Berkey Primer™ to speed up drying and make re-priming easier.
Red Food Coloring Test (Optional System Check)
- This test checks whether your filters and blocking plugs are properly sealed:
- Fill upper chamber with water
- Add 10 drops of red artificial food coloring per gallon
- Let system filter through
- If water is clear, your filters are functioning properly
- If water is pink/red, re-tighten or re-prime the filters and repeat the test
Note: Do not perform this test with PF-2 filters attached.
Best Practices & Precautions
- Never use hot or boiling water in the system
- Avoid direct sunlight or placement near a heat source
- Never let wet Black Berkey® filters freeze—freezing can damage the micro-structure and void the warranty
- If you're storing the lower chamber with water, do not overfill the upper chamber to avoid overflow
