FAQ
What kind of water can I use with the ÖKO Bottle?
You can use:
- Tap water
- Well water
- River or lake water (ideally with the Level-3 filter)
- Do not use with seawater or chemically contaminated water, such as from industrial runoff. These require specialized treatment.
What contaminants does the ÖKO Bottle remove?
The Filter media was originally designed for use in the International Space Station (ISS) for recycling bodily fluids in space and made available to us through the NASA Spinoff® V program. It uses an electro-adsorption system to attract and retain negative particles.
Depending on the filter used, the Bottle will filter the following:
- Level-2: Viruses, bacteria, heavy metals, chlorine, pesticides, and more
- Level-3: Bacteria, parasites, protozoa, large viruses, and solid sediments
How does the ÖKO filter work?
- Level-2 uses NASA-developed electro-adsorbent nano-filtration, attracting and capturing contaminants as water passes through.
- Level-3 uses a 0.1-micron hollow fiber membrane to physically block pathogens.
How do I use the ÖKO Bottle?
It’s as easy as:
- Fill the bottle with water
- Squeeze lightly
- Drink directly—no suction or pump required
Do I need to prepare the filter before first use?
Yes. For Level-2 filters, flush the filter by filling the bottle and squeezing water through it once. A slight gray tint in the water at first is just harmless carbon residue.
Can I use the bottle without the filter?
Absolutely. Just remove the filter to use your bottle as a fruit infuser or regular water bottle.
Can I use the ÖKO filter with juices or supplements?
You can add vitamins and hydration powders inside the Level-2 filter’s cartridge
Do not use with fruit juice, sugary drinks, or medication
How do I clean the ÖKO Bottle?
- Bottle: Hand wash with mild soap and water
- Cap and spout: Clean with a soft brush
- Filters: Rinse only with clean water
Never use soap, hot water, or dishwashers on the filters
How often should I replace the filter?
- Level-2: Every 3–4 months or after 380 liters
- Level-3: After 1,000 liters
If you notice a slower water flow, it’s time to replace the filter.
Are Level-2 and Level-3 filters interchangeable?
Yes—but with slight differences:
- Level-2 screws directly into the ÖKO bottle
- Level-3 comes with an adapter and two straws for bottle integration or stand-alone use
What ÖKO bottles are compatible with these filters?
Both Level-2 and Level-3 filters are compatible with the ÖKO 1000mL bottles.
What is the OKO Bottle made of?
The Bottle is made of a custom grade of polypropylene which does not leach chemicals in warm climates, it is BPA, phthalate and toxin-free and it is soft and squeezable in order to force water through the filtration system. It includes a retractable nozzle and a round carabiner to carry or hook the bottle onto a bag or a belt. It is compliant with food safety standards.
The flexible polypropylene body is easy to squeeze — this pressure forces the water through the high-performance filter. With steel or glass, this action would be impossible.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Why is the water flow slow?
The filter may be clogged—try rinsing with clean water. If the problem persists, it's likely time to replace the filter
My bottle leaks—what should I check?
- Make sure the cap is fully sealed
- Check for cross-threading or debris on the seal
- Ensure the filter is properly installed
I see black specks in my water—is that normal?
Yes. That’s just activated carbon dust from the new filter. It’s safe and will disappear after the first flush.
